Figures and Cars
Sounding Boards are pieces that call up my New England surroundings and find resonance and sanctuary there. These have figure and sound elements and are meant to draw others into catching and holding their sense of place and their memories and dreams.
Unexpected Events is a series of sculptures that reflects on occurrences that have to do with our cars. These events surprise us, are briefly alarming, and then become funny, because no one is harmed. They are antidotes to accidents and other calamities that are shocking and terrible. They give us a brief moment to laugh in the face of so much that can be terrifying and overwhelming.
Torture Preserved is an acknowledgement of such horrors. These sculptures honor the victims of torture in many areas of the world. I was led to these particular images upon hearing a story about a memorial to the Rwandan genocide where the people of the community where the killings took place decided to preserve the victims’ bodies in lime. The memorial is difficult to be at and assaults the visitors’ senses, but its power is astonishing. The torture scandals in Iraq also influenced this sculpture series.
