Woodblocks, Prints, and Drawings
My approach to making prints has mostly to do with the carving process and the wood block itself. The most recent prints and drawings are about providing a base for drawing and collage to evoke a certain place and walk, as companions to the sculptures in the series called "20 Walks."
With others, the scale of the block is large in order to be able to carve freely with a chainsaw, a less than delicate tool. Once it is carved, numerous different colored prints are pulled from it in order to build up a rich surface color on the block. Several of the prints have more than one layer of ink, and some have a mixture of colors based on the residue of previous prints. I often draw on top of the print in order to further reveal the image suggested in the print, and to balance and contain the random visual energy of the chainsaw marks.
